Jams has been sold out for a few years. I have pulled a few copies from my archive to make these Special Edition sets of Jams and Jams too. These 21 sets each come with a Limited Edition Print from the very first book.
Each is signed with matching edition numbers. For example, Edition 3 of Jams is paired with Edition 3 of Jams Too and Edition 3 of the print.
These shirts are from the early 80’s to the mid-90’s. I have a close friend who started collecting them around 2010, his name is Brion.
As kids, we both wore this type of look but Brion lived in San Ramon and I lived in Miami Beach. We didn’t meet until we were older, having both lived in LA.
His collection started out simple: a few impulse purchases online to satiate the elevated heartbeat of nostalgia. But the details of the shirts were unexpectedly particular, the techniques and the quality of construction were surprisingly refined. We would marvel at the details – the paint speckled buttons, the psychedelic patterns, the Memphis inspired shapes and colors, the bold branding. The cut of these shirts implied a retrograde sense of leisure while the materials and patterns pointed to post-modernism. The heart beat faster and the collection grew.
On visits back to Los Angeles, I would take him out around the city and photograph him wearing them. We’d scout some locations and then shoot for a few hours. I wanted to make a contemporary look-book for an anachronistic line of clothing. When his collection hit 45, I made the book and named it JAMS. That book sold out.
His collection is nearing 78 shirts now. JAMS TOO is the updated state of the JAMS project. It’s JAMS for 2021. It’s JAMS, too.
